@Jeff: I agree, and I have beef with lots of organized religion(s). But since I live in an 80% "Christian" country, where 90% of our elected leaders self-identify as Christian, they in particular chafe me.

@Rebecca: That article was excellent, and brings up so many good points. Thanks! As for taxes, it isn't even things like that that irk me, not really. Don't pay for social programs, fine. But could they stop claiming to cherish life and then acting indignant at the thought of having to stop using cluster bombs on civilian areas? And I wish I was making that up, but I watched an internet forum of right wingers get pissed off at the insinuation that we should sign on to the cluster munitions treaty. What would Jesus do? Be A-OK with "collateral damage" apparently. *sigh*.

I was just having this discussion the other day with someone at work- they claim to be so Christian, but they don't want their taxes to go up to pay for social programs that help the down trodden. They're in it only for themselves. On gay marriage, here’s a good article you should read: http://www.newsweek.com/id/172653

The same thing goes for almost any religion. In the U.S. the Christians are the loudest, but I'm sure there's more than a few million Muslims that are at least as pissed off about the shit that their radicals do in the name of Muhammad and Allah. It's the biggest scourge of humanity, this kind of ignorance and blind faith. If only we had some sort of publicly accessible educational institutions in which we could teach people to think for themselves.
